Thanks Sanzhar and Brancen for a Great Summer of Ocean Drilling and Paleomagnetic Research!

July 29, 2025

Brancen Redman (Oklahoma State University) and Sanzhar Khamitov (Bowdoin College) recently finished their Lamont Summer Internships, supported by the US Science Support Program to work on International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) research.  Both Brancen and Sanzhar made great contributions to our understanding of the magnetic minerals and paleomagnetic signals in cores recovered last summer during the final JOIDES Resolution expedition, IODP Exp. 403 Eastern Fram Strait Paleo-Archive.  While Sanzhar focused on the centennial to millennial scale variations of inclination, declination, and relative paleointensity recovered in sediments spanning the the last ice age through Holocene, Brancen dug into the magnetic mineralogy of 2.5+ million year old Pliocene aged sediments to help improve the magnetic age dating.  It was a pleasure having both of them in the lab and we will miss all the positive energy and ideas they brought with them.  Lucky for us, they are both planning to present their findings in New Orleans during the fall American Geophysical Union meeting.

Best of luck to both of Brancen and Sanzhar in their future research pursuits.  See you in New Orleans!
